The recently completed “Greens revenge“ golf tour in the Midlands delivered some major surprises. The golf tour was the brain child of Carl Groenewald, when the tour kicked-off twenty five years ago with twelve players. Players from Johannesburg, CapeTown (all old school buddies of Carl), joined with ex Pietermaritzburg FNB banker, Gary Ponting, Graham Crookes , Rob Martin and many others  who have joined over the years. Tours have been undertaken to George, Sun City, Cape Town, East London and locally the Midlands, Durban and South and North coast golf courses.

Sadly recently Rob Martin passed away, who was for many years the tour organiser and carried the purse. Rob joins three other golfers Greg Burnett, Rowan Meak and Derrick Dollman that have left us behind. The tour  now consists of only eight golfers, with four golfers now  from St Cathryn’s. A wreath was layed at the third hole for all golfing buddies that have gone ahead.

Day one was played at St Cathryn’s, followed by Gowrie, VCC, Boschoek and Howick. At St Cathryn’s the four St Cathryns members took on the rest of South Africa greens revenge team and the winning team, Carl Groenewald, Fritz Volker, Piet Nel and Shawn Prenger walked over their opponents  (on their home course) to keep the Miners spade floating trophy.

On Friday the Lads took on the Dads, with the  four youngest players took on the four oldest players and the lads got thumbed 4-0 in a stableford match play format.

New kid on the block and St Cathryn’s member, Fritz Volker playing many of the courses for the first time, at the end of the weekend lost by two points from Lance Faure the overall winner and scored an unbelievable six pointer on one of the courses, at their Stoke one hole.

This past Saturday 14 November 2020, the Farmers Agri-care monthly mug was played in severe heat and the whole fleet of St Cathryn’s carts were utilised, with not many golfers opting to walk. It was also the last game where the winner of the Grand Prix, would be determined so lots of points were up for grabs and Maruis Muller by winning the mug on Saturday also took the Grand Prix title.
